Mythology & History

Mythology & History

Naxos also has the highest mountain in the Cycladic chain – Mt. Zas – named after the Greek God Zeus who is said to have visited the island. Greek mythology plays a large part in the history of Naxos. It is where Thiseus abandoned Ariadne after slaying the Minotaur at Knossos in Crete. This is where she later met Dionysos the god of wine and the protector of Naxos.

In 1204 the Italian Duke Marco Sanudo conquered the island and built a castle on the hill. Two of the original seven towers are still left and create an impressive site amongst the medieval village still remaining on the hill behind the main town. Venetian descendants  still live in the mansions in the old city and attend the catholic church that can be found at the top of the hill.

Facts

In Naxos you will find the traditional blue and white cube shaped houses, byzantine monasteries, a fantastically preserved temple  dedicated to the goddess Dimitra, a Venetian Castle, the famous marble Kouros boys ( statues depicting male youth carved in the Archaic period-6th century) and many ancient towers and forts scattered throughout the island. Naxos is also one of the most fertile cycladic islands with green valleys where you can follow shaded river paths to escape the summer heat. With agriculture as its number one industry your Greek salad will be made with sweet, juicy, locally grown produce and the meat will be sourced from local farms.
